Getting Started with Sollingo
The complete setup guide — account creation, course selection, hearts/XP, family setup, chores, TV time, the shop, and Pro. About 15-20 minutes if you set everything up.
If you just want the fastest path to a first lesson, use the Quick Start Guide instead.

1. Account Creation
Sollingo uses Clerk for authentication — sign up with email or a supported social provider at sollingo.afanou.com. No credit card is required to create an account or use the free tier.
Every family member who will learn (parent or child) needs their own account, since progress, hearts, and XP are tracked per user.
2. Choosing a Course
Go to the Courses page and pick from 5 languages:
- Spanish
- French
- Italian
- Croatian
- Japanese
Your active course is highlighted with a border. You can switch your active course at any time — progress in each course is saved independently, so switching doesn’t erase anything.
3. Understanding Hearts and XP

- Hearts are your lives for a lesson — most learners start with 5. Losing all your hearts stops you from starting a new lesson until they refill, you spend gems in the Shop, or you go Pro for unlimited hearts.
- XP is earned per completed lesson (more for a perfect run) and is what the Leaderboard ranks on.
- Streaks count consecutive days with at least one completed lesson.
4. Family Setup
Sollingo’s Parent Dashboard is what makes it a family tool rather than a solo app.
- As a parent, create your own account (or use an existing one)
- Go to the Parent Dashboard
- Use Link Child and enter your child’s account details to connect them to your family
- Once linked, the dashboard shows all your children in one list, with each child’s course progress, hearts, and virtual wallet balance
Parents can link multiple children. Each child keeps their own login and progress — the parent account only gets visibility and approval controls, not the ability to log lessons on the child’s behalf.
5. The Chore System
Chores are how real-world responsibilities turn into hearts.
- From the Parent Dashboard, a parent creates a chore (e.g. “Make your bed”) and assigns it to a linked child
- The child sees the chore on the Chores page and marks it as done
- The parent reviews pending requests on the dashboard and approves or rejects them
- Approved chores add hearts to the child’s account; the Chores page keeps a history of past submissions
This is deliberately a manual approval step — Sollingo never auto-approves a chore, so parents stay in the loop on what actually got done.
6. TV Time
TV Time converts lesson performance into a real-world reward parents can use.
- Every completed lesson adds minutes to a child’s TV Time balance — a perfect (no-mistake) lesson earns more minutes than one with wrong answers
- The TV Time page shows the current balance, a breakdown of how it works, and a transaction history (minutes earned per lesson vs. minutes a parent has marked as watched)
- Parents set the ground rules for how those minutes get “spent” outside the app — Sollingo tracks the balance, it doesn’t control a TV
7. The Shop
The Shop page is where gems (earned through lessons and quests) get spent:
- Hearts refill — buy hearts back immediately instead of waiting for the timed refill
- Pro upgrade — the shop is also where the Pro subscription is offered (see Upgrading to Pro)
8. Quests and the Leaderboard
- Quests are goals (e.g. “Earn 20 XP today”) shown on the Quests page with a progress bar per quest. Completing one grants a reward, usually gems.
- Leaderboard ranks learners by XP earned in the current period, showing the top 10 plus your own current ranking if you’re outside it. It’s a friendly nudge, not a requirement — you can ignore it entirely and still track progress through hearts, XP, and streaks.
9. Upgrading to Pro
Pro removes the heart limit — no more waiting or spending gems to keep learning. It’s a $9.99/month subscription billed through Stripe, upgradeable or cancelable at any time from the Shop page.
Everything else — all 5 courses, chores, TV Time, quests, and the leaderboard — is included in the free tier; Pro’s only difference is unlimited hearts.
