TL;DR: Poor roaming between two OpenWrt routers sharing one SSID came from three misconfigurations, not a missing mesh kit: the secondary’s WAN port was bridged into the LAN, 802.11r was missing on its 2.4 GHz radio, and its channel 10 overlapped the non-overlapping options. Moving the backhaul cable to a LAN port, enabling 802.11r and switching to channel 6 fixed it.
